WASTE FREE EVEREST
Rotary Centennial Everest Expedition – 2005

“Waste Free Everest” is a valued added Program. The Everest Expedition – 2005 and was organized by Zero Waste Nepal and the Rotary Clubs of Nepal to celebrate the Rotary Centennial Year 2005. To mark the occasion, a team of rotaracts Ms. Moni Mulepati, Mr.Kami Sherpa and Mr. Pem Dorzee Sherpa scaled the Mount Everest in May 30, 2005 and hosted the National Flag of Nepal and Rotary International. Along with 35 rotarians visiting Namche Bazaar, they carried Waste Free Everest Banner. The waste collected from the Everest comprises of parts of a helicopter crashed some 25 years back, recovery of a dead body from ravines of Everest and waste dumped by previous Everest Expedition teams. The team also brought back all matters carried by them and collected human excreta. In addition, nearby 430 kg waste was also collected by the rotaracts’s team, of which 300 kg was burnt nearby the base camp and 130 kg brought in Kathmandu. Estimated cost of waste collection from the Everest comes at US $400 per kg. Accordingly, waste collected by the team has a value of US$172,000. This is net saving to the Government. This figure confirms that the cost spent on Everest Expedition is fully recovered. The program was designed to build awareness of the communities in mass in the country and the world.
