| Physical Capabilities and
Experience The NGO has had experience of over two years
in its services. During this period, it had completed a project
called “Feasibility Study On Community Based Solid Waste Management”
in Dharan Municipality, Nepal from July 2002 to January 2003, funded
by USAID, Delhi, India. The prime objective of the study was to
conceive a strategy for the Community Base Solid Waste Management.
The project is one of notable efforts. The report emphasized on
the private-public participation for solid waste management based
on Waste Reduction Approach and recommended to initiate a pilot
programme.
With its aims to capacity building of the people at project area,
the study team together with Dharan Municipality organized two workshops:
one prior to commencing the study and another after the completion
of the Draft Final Report. Moreover, it was also targeted to float
the outcomes from the study on community based solid waste management
project.

The last workshop was chaired by the former Mayor Mr. Manoj Kumar
Meyangbo of Dharan Municipality and participated by the representatives
of various local NGOs/ CBOs and individuals. Altogether 55 participants
attended the workshop. The participants comprised of representatives
from different organizations such as business houses, I/NGOs/ CBOs,
women groups, and individuals. During the session a live interaction
was on the floor with grand enthusiasm of the participants on the
findings of the study. The study was carried out by ZWN and NSET
Nepal.

Awareness Raising & Information
The achievements are discussed herewith:
Since it's establishment the organization has been carrying out
programme of paper presentation on zero waste concept to enhance
the level of awareness of the people on waste reduction in association
with other organizations that are:

Shriti Sewa Samaj
On July 2000, one-day live interaction programme was conducted
with 84 students of computer literacy programme conducted by Shriti
Sewa Samaj Lazimpat. At the open discussion, the participants expressed
their view that almost all types of waste can be management by separating
for composting and by the category of waste. But it was not be possible
if the commitment of people do not strong and do not join hands.
Interestingly, most of the participants indicated their interest
to follow the concept from their own house first, and gradually
spreading it to the neighbours.
During the session, some participants also lead the session deliberating
the message to the Kathmandu People that, if every people start
the concept right from their house the problem will not be faced
longer.

The Explore Nepal
On May 2001, ZWN delivered an interaction programme on Zero Waste
concept. The programme was organized in association with the Explore
Nepal, (P) Ltd. with the participation of almost 50 representations
including the Mayor of KTM and others from various organizations
such as WIPCO, Martin Chautari, the Explore Nepal, journalists etc.
The President of ZWN and the Explore Nepal jointly chaired the event.
The Mayor of Kathmandu Municipality appreciated the concept and
delivered message to people to follow. He also added that such concept
will help not only to improve the overall environmental condition
of Kathmandu but other urban areas too, and it will also help to
save the nation’s expenditures on solid waste management.
National level newspaper the Kathmandu Post subsequently provided
wide coverage of the event.

Tribeni Youth Club
On June 2002, ZWN organized a live interaction programme at Bhadrabas
VDC in north east of Kathmandu. The programme was on the floor in
association with a local club named Tribeni Youth Club on the request
by the patron of the club Achutananda Bhandari. Almost 35 participants
including local school teachers, social workers, housewives, students
businessmen and other enthusiastic youths participated in the programme.

The program began with a paper presentation on Zero Waste concept
followed by several questions raised by the participants on the
solid waste issues. The programme was an excellent event and participants
were satisfied with the concept that this concept is practical and
can be followed. A resolution was also made to apply the concept
at all houses of the VDC. The participants realized the importance
of the issues. The club is declared a Focal point to disseminate
the concept and massive participation.

Rotary Club of Mt. Everest
On the request of Rotary Club of Mt. Everest Kathmandu, a paper
on Zero Waste concept was presented by the president of ZWN at Greenwhitch
Village Hotel. About 20 members of the Club participated in the
programme. It was one of the most precious events where certain
commitments were made by the participants towards mobilizing other
Rotary clubs in Patan to initiate a pilot program.

Banganga Samaj Sudhar Samittee
An interaction programme in association with Banganga Society
Improvement Committee of Chandani Tole, Naya Baneshwor was organized
at Ratna Rajya School with initiative of a focal point of ZWN named
ITECO Nepal. The programme was participated by 35 participants with
a great zeal towards the concept to be followed. During the session,
issues on the waste management was raised and the deteriorating
human behaviour and civic sense was realized. Most of the participants
indicated their interest to join hands with ZWN to apply the concept
practically.

ToT Programme with Member Organizations
ZWN has taken an initiative to nominate certain local organizations
interested to carry its mission as its focal points. The initial
focal points are the member organizations who take initiatives to
organize an interactive training programme. Several programmes on
the Zero Waste concept were organized with the staff of its member
organizations at their offices. These offices are ITECO Nepal, Technical
Interface, Nepal Consult, BDA Nepal, and MULTI Disciplinary Consultants.
The aim of the ToT programs were to orient them on the concept and
objectives, so that the participants will become capable to disseminate
the concept independently and help to fulfill the ZWN’s objectives.

Rotary Club of Kathmandu Mid Town
On April 2002 with the initiative of Rotary Club of Kathmandu Mid
Town, an interaction programme on the possibility of Waste reduction
through Zero Waste concept was held at Hotel Sherpa. The programme
was participated by 25 members of the club including a most successful
business man and former member of parliament Mr. Roop Jyoti.

Lions Club of Kathmandu
On April 2002, the Lions Club of Kathmandu invited the ZWN president
Mr. Badan Lal Nyachhyon to deliver the message for reduction of
the waste through Zero Waste concept. The programme was held at
Hotel Shangrilla. The event was on the floor with almost 100 participants
representing various sectors of the club.

Rotary Club of Kathmandu (West)
On May 2002, the concept on zero waste was discussed with the members
of Rotary Club of Kathmandu (West) at Grand Hotel. During the session,
issues on the possibility of the reduction of waste through application
of zero waste concept were raised, and realized it as a practical
concept. Most of the participants determined to follow it starting
from their homes.

SOPHEN
On the 5th June 2002, on the auspicious occasion of the World Environment
Day, a paper on Zero Waste concept was presented by the president
of ZWN. About 150 participants took part in the programme and raised
several issues addressing the concept.
Teaching Hospital, Maharajgunj
On February 2002, an interaction programme was organized in initiative
of Dr. Nhuchhe Tuladhar to discuss the possibility of application
of Zero waste concept in the management of Hospital waste.

with SILTES - BMC, in Biratnagar on zero waste concept.

Kathmandu
On 15th June 2003, an interaction programme with selected persons
with SILTES - BMC on zero waste concepts.
